Tadej Pogačar is poised to make history at the 2024 Il Lombardia, the “Race of the Falling Leaves.”

Posted on October 12, 2024

Tadej Pogačar is poised to make history at the 2024 Il Lombardia, the “Race of the Falling Leaves.” Already a three-time consecutive winner, Pogačar enters this year’s race as the reigning world champion, aiming for a fourth straight victory. This would equal the legendary Fausto Coppi’s record of four consecutive wins from 1946 to 1949.

The 2024 edition promises a challenging course, starting in Bergamo and finishing in Como after tackling the iconic climbs of Ghisallo and Colma di Sormano. This 239 km route includes steep gradients and tough ascents, with the final climb at San Fermo della Battaglia potentially determining the race outcome.

Pogačar faces stiff competition from top riders, including Remco Evenepoel, fresh off an outstanding season with nine wins, and Primož Roglič, who recently claimed the Vuelta a España. Enric Mas, Julian Alaphilippe, and Andrea Bagioli are also among the key contenders. However, Pogačar’s dominance and tactical prowess make him the clear favorite.

If Pogačar manages to claim victory, he will further solidify his place in cycling history and set himself up as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
