British Airways (BA) has announced an innovative plan to offset its rising carbon emissions by using a natural process called “enhanced weathering,” which involves sprinkling crushed rocks onto fields. This method is gaining attention for its potential to capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide. The idea behind enhanced weathering is that when certain types of rocks, such as basalt, are broken down and exposed to CO2 in the air, they chemically react to form stable carbonates, effectively removing carbon from the atmosphere.
As part of this plan, BA aims to apply crushed rock on farmland, where it will interact with both air and soil, accelerating the natural weathering process. This approach is particularly attractive because it not only captures CO2 but also has the potential to improve soil health, aiding in agricultural productivity. The crushed rocks can enhance soil pH levels and provide essential nutrients, benefiting crops while also contributing to climate goals.
BA’s move is part of a broader effort to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with international climate commitments. The airline has recognized that, while efforts to transition to sustainable aviation fuel and more efficient aircraft are ongoing, they are not enough to counterbalance the industry’s rising emissions in the short term. Enhanced weathering offers a complementary solution.
Critics argue that this method is still largely experimental and requires careful monitoring to ensure its effectiveness at scale.
