Belarus Olympic sprinter who was in an airport standoff in Tokyo finds a new life running for Poland…..see more details

Posted on August 12, 2024

Kristina Timanovskaya, the Belarusian Olympic sprinter who made headlines during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after a dramatic airport standoff, has found a new chapter in her life representing Poland. During the Tokyo Olympics, Timanovskaya publicly criticized her coaches, which led to her being abruptly withdrawn from the Games by Belarusian officials. Fearing for her safety, she sought refuge in the Polish embassy in Tokyo and was granted a humanitarian visa, allowing her to escape what she described as a forced return to Belarus.

In Poland, Timanovskaya has successfully integrated into a new life, both personally and professionally. In 2022, she was granted Polish citizenship, enabling her to compete for her adopted country on the international stage. Her decision to represent Poland was not just about continuing her athletic career but also about embracing the freedom and security she found in her new home.

Timanovskaya’s move to Poland marked a significant change, as she went from being a symbol of resistance against the Belarusian regime to an inspiring figure of resilience and adaptation. She has expressed deep gratitude to Poland for giving her the opportunity to live and compete freely, without the fear of political persecution.

On the track, Timanovskaya continues to pursue her Olympic dreams, now wearing the red and white of Poland. Her journey reflects not only the power of sport to transcend borders but also the profound impact of political unrest on individual lives. As she prepares for future competitions, Timanovskaya remains a poignant reminder of the intersection between sports and human rights, and her story continues to inspire those who fight for freedom and justice around the world.
