The Minnesota Vikings find themselves in a quarterback predicament, with Jaren Hall’s concussion adding to their woes shortly after losing Kirk Cousins for the season. In response, they need to bolster their quarterback roster.
Jaren Hall, a rookie, suffered a concussion during his first career start against the Atlanta Falcons on November 5. Josh Dobbs, recently acquired from the Arizona Cardinals, had to step in as the emergency quarterback. Cam Akers, a backup running back, was designated as the emergency quarterback for the game.
Given the urgency and the fact that the trade deadline has passed, the Vikings must turn to free agency for a solution. Colt McCoy, a seasoned NFL journeyman, appears to be the most suitable option left on the market.
Colt McCoy’s potential fit with the Minnesota Vikings makes sense for several reasons. Firstly, he has a history with head coach Kevin O’Connell, having worked together during McCoy’s time with the Washington Commanders from 2017 to 2019. McCoy’s familiarity with O’Connell’s system prompted the Vikings to consider him earlier in the season when backup Nick Mullens went on IR due to a back injury.
Additionally, the Vikings seem unwilling to make a significant financial commitment for a Cousins replacement, at least until the next offseason. McCoy, at 37 years old, can be acquired at a reasonable cost. His most recent contract with the Cardinals was a two-year, $7.5 million deal.
While McCoy’s record as a starter is 11-25 over his 12 NFL seasons, he boasts a career completion percentage of 62.6% and has thrown for 7,975 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference.
The injuries to Jaren Hall and Nick Mullens have left the Vikings with uncertainties at the quarterback position. Although they may not need McCoy to start, adding depth at the position is essential.
Jaren Hall showed promise in his debut, completing 5-of-6 passes for 78 yards before his injury. However, the unpredictable nature of concussions makes it uncertain when he will return, if at all. Nick Mullens, eligible to return from IR soon, may still require additional time to be ready.
Josh Dobbs, despite having some moments in his first game with the Vikings, had limited time to learn the playbook, resulting in unfavorable outcomes, including a safety and a fumble. While he led the Vikings to a touchdown drive late in the first half, Minnesota faces challenges for the rest of the season.
With a 4-4 record and the potential return of All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, the Vikings’ playoff aspirations are at stake. Adding another viable quarterback option, such as Colt McCoy, appears to be the logical choice to contend down the stretch.
