In the midst of multiple injuries impacting the Green Bay Packers’ offensive lineup, undrafted rookie wide receiver Malik Heath stepped up to the plate in a standout performance during the Thanksgiving matchup against the Detroit Lions.
With key players like tight end Luke Musgrave and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks sidelined due to injuries, Heath seized the opportunity for increased playing time. Musgrave’s absence, in particular, left a void in the offense as he neared breaking a franchise record for rookie tight ends in receiving yards.
Despite playing only 11 snaps, Heath made a significant impact in the game, recording four receptions on four targets for 46 yards. What makes his performance even more impressive is the recognition from Pro Football Focus (PFF), where Heath earned the highest grade of any offensive player on the team.
According to PFF, Heath secured an outstanding 94.5 overall grade, including a 90.6 receiving grade and an exceptional 95.6 run-blocking grade. While his stats might not overshadow Christian Watson’s notable performance, Heath’s contributions played a crucial role in sustaining offensive momentum.
Heath’s season totals now stand at five receptions for 53 yards, surpassing the rookie seasons of former Packers wide receivers like Allen Lazard, Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson, and Jarrett Boykin.
One notable aspect of Heath’s performance was his utilization in key situations over 2022 seventh-round pick Samori Toure. Despite Toure’s presence in the recent game against the Lions, he played only three snaps, raising questions about his future role with the team, especially considering the upcoming strong wide receiver class in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As the Packers look ahead, Heath’s ability to seamlessly fill in for injured players enhances his case as the fifth wide receiver option. The top four positions appear secure with Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Wicks. Heath’s consistent performances position him favorably, making him a notable asset for the Packers.
