An Australian navy ship helped rescue three sailors stranded in rough seas after their yacht was damaged while navigating treacherous conditions in the Coral Sea. The sailors, two Russians and one Frenchman, found themselves in a life-threatening situation when their yacht was hit by bad weather, facing six-meter-high waves that left them struggling to maintain control.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the 9-meter yacht encountered severe weather conditions approximately 800 kilometers off the coast of Cairns. The powerful waves and winds damaged the yacht’s mast and sails, making it nearly impossible for the sailors to maneuver. With their vessel taking on water and drifting uncontrollably, the sailors sent out a distress signal, prompting a rapid response from Australian authorities.
A nearby Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) aircraft located the stricken yacht, but rough conditions made it difficult for any immediate rescue. One of the sailors on board the yacht was heard saying, “The yacht was running away from us,” highlighting the desperate situation they were in as they struggled to keep the vessel under control.
The Australian navy’s HMAS Brisbane was dispatched to the area, navigating the rough seas to reach the sailors. After several tense hours, the navy team successfully rescued the three men, bringing them safely on board the ship. The sailors were reported to be in good health despite the ordeal and were provided with medical checks and care.
The rescue operation demonstrated the professionalism and quick response of the Australian navy and AMSA in dealing with maritime emergencies. The sailors expressed their gratitude to the navy crew for their bravery and swift action in coming to their aid amid challenging conditions. The yacht was left behind, damaged beyond repair, but the focus remained on the sailors’ safe return to shore.
