The Packers decided to extend Jordan Love’s contract after he declined the fifth-year option, according to the terms of his agreement.

It is cash for Love.

Jordan Love is now the Packers’ first quarterback, having waited three seasons.
For the first-year starter, things have been a bit of a mixed bag thus far: Love has completed just 53% of his passes in the first three games of the season, despite tossing seven touchdown passes to just one interception.

Nevertheless, the Packers have a 2-1 record so far thanks to their talented quarterback, who undoubtedly wants to stay in Green Bay as long as his predecessor.
But earlier in the offseason, there were some doubts about Love’s future with the team.

The Packers decided to be creative with a new deal for the fourth-year passer because Love’s effectiveness as an NFL-level passer was in some ways in doubt.
This was a decision that was somewhat in the Packers’ favor.

Reasons for this include:.

Contract information involving Jordan Love.

Love’s fifth-year option, which would have committed him to playing for Green Bay through the 2024 season, was rejected by the Packers before the start of the current campaign. Love was instead given a two-year extension by the Packers for $22.5 million, with $13.5 million guaranteed.

Although that’s a nice sum of money for a player who hasn’t played (or demonstrated) much in the NFL, the Packers made a wise business decision by doing it.

Love’s fifth-year option, which was worth roughly the same as the deal he signed, would have paid out a fully guaranteed $22.562 million over the following two seasons, but Green Bay GM Brian Gutekunst wasn’t keen on doing so.

Gutekunst remarked in April, “It’s a lot of money for a guy who hasn’t played.
We are, of course, moving forward with him at the same time.
Therefore, we’ll determine that by Tuesday (the expiration date of the fifth-year option).
“.

And after figuring it out, they signed Love to that two-year contract.

On the surface, it appears to be a shrewd, astute business decision for the Packers: Green Bay receives a controllable QB contract for the following two seasons, with Love’s second year heavily weighted with incentives to reach its full value.

In contrast, Love’s choice was a little perplexing. Love didn’t exactly put himself in a position to bet on himself and get set for a big payday, not only from Green Bay but from the rest of the NFL.
However, there is still a chance that the Packers rip up Love’s contract and give him a more significant extension after the 2023 season should he perform.

Due to all of this, Love’s contract is an interesting one, and the decision that will be made after the 2023 NFL season is an even more intriguing one.
