Swiss police provided an update on the fatal accident involving 18-year-old cyclist Muriel Furrer during the UCI Road World Championships in Zurich. Furrer crashed during the junior women’s road race in a wooded area near Küsnacht on September 26, 2024. She sustained severe head injuries and was later found unconscious by a track safety official. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Furrer succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Authorities confirmed that there were no eyewitnesses, video footage, or time records of the fall, and investigations are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances. The crash occurred during a descent on a wet, sharp left-hand bend, raising concerns about race conditions. Although her accident overshadowed the event, the championship continued at her family’s request.

The tragic accident has raised broader concerns within the cycling community about safety measures during races.
