A Spirit Airlines flight attendant sustained minor injuries after the aircraft was struck by gunfire while approaching Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on November 11, 2024. Flight 951, en route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was approximately 550 feet above ground when it was hit by multiple bullets, prompting the pilots to abort the landing and divert to Santiago, Dominican Republic.
Upon inspection in Santiago, the Airbus A320neo displayed damage consistent with gunfire, including bullet holes in the fuselage and cabin. The injured flight attendant was grazed by debris caused by the gunfire and received medical evaluation; no passengers were harmed.
In response to the incident, Spirit Airlines suspended its services to Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien pending further evaluation. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration also imposed a 30-day ban on U.S. flights to Haiti due to safety concerns.
The attack coincided with the swearing-in of a new Haitian prime minister and reflects the escalating gang violence in the region, which has increasingly targeted transportation infrastructure.
