Speculation Mounts as Joe Barry’s Return to Green Bay in 2024 Gains Ground

Posted on December 6, 2023

In recent years, few figures in Green Bay have drawn more criticism than Joe Barry. Despite the initial assumption that his tenure would conclude after the season, whether due to an expiring contract or a pink slip, the narrative is shifting. There is now a growing openness to the idea, if not the likelihood, that Barry might find himself back in Green Bay for the 2024 season and beyond.

If Joe Barry were to sit down with Matt LaFleur today to plead his case for job retention, he would present a compelling argument. Despite consistent struggles in the run game, the Packers’ defense has consistently positioned the team for victory. Currently ranking ninth in the league in scoring defense and boasting the eighth-best red zone scoring percentage, Barry’s defense, at its best, epitomizes a bend-but-don’t-break unit.

Over the past five weeks, the Packers have showcased defensive prowess, allowing just 17.4 points per game. Notably, they have never surrendered more than 23 points in a single contest, and three times they held opponents to 20 or fewer points. While skeptics may attribute these achievements to matchups against less formidable quarterbacks like Brett Rypien and Kenny Pickett, the defense’s ability to contain the likes of Justin Herbert, Jared Goff, and Patrick Mahomes cannot be dismissed.

Remarkably, the defense has maintained its resilience despite key absences throughout the season. Jaire Alexander, Darnell Savage, De’Vondre Campbell, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas have all faced injuries or missed significant playing time. Yet, Barry’s coaching staff has successfully tapped into the potential of young players and less heralded veterans, contributing to the team’s defensive stability.

Carrington Valentine has displayed veteran-like performance, Corey Ballentine has transitioned from a career special teamer to a significant contributor with over 300 defensive snaps, and Rudy Ford and Jonathan Owens have provided reliable support. Even rookie day-three pick Karl Brooks has made solid contributions on the defensive front.

While some may consider this praise to be relatively subdued, it acknowledges the defense’s ability to uphold its end of the bargain this season. As the season unfolds, the possibility of Joe Barry returning for the 2024 season is becoming less far-fetched. The resilience of the Packers’ defense and the adaptability demonstrated by Barry’s coaching staff may pave the way for a continuation of his tenure in Green Bay.

As discussions and speculations mount regarding Joe Barry’s future, one thing remains certain – the Packers’ defense has become a key player in the team’s success, making Barry’s potential return a subject of increasing interest and anticipation among Green Bay fans.
