Rashan Gary suffered an ACL tear in the grueling Green Bay Packers defeat to the Detroit Lions in Week 9 of last season, and it has been 319 days since that time.
On that particular day, the Packers suffered significant losses in addition to the game. Gary was suspended for the entire season, and it’s impossible to predict whether a player will recover from a serious knee injury.
Against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, we discovered the solution.
Gary played a crucial role in Green Bay’s stifling defense, which allowed just 10 points to the Saints.
Gary had three sacks, bringing his season total to 3/5. While that is impressive, Gary’s decision to play at all at the beginning of the season was in doubt.
An ACL injury can be difficult to recover from.
Take David Bakhtiari, for instance.
A few weeks before the first game, Gary was just taken off the injured reserve. The former Michigan Wolverine would gradually transition back into a more permanent position.
You wouldn’t know Gary was on a snap count by looking at his statistics.
In terms of total pressures, total sacks, and total hurries, Gary is currently tied for tenth place.
T. J.
Some of the top edge rushers in the league, such as Watt, Myles Garrett, and Micah Parsons, are ranked ahead of him in terms of total pressures.
The players ranked ahead of him and all of those players have collectively played a lot more snaps.
Therefore, they had more chances to pressure the quarterback.
With six sacks, Watt tops the NFL in both that category and pressure rate (12.71 percent).
However, Gary is the second-highest pressure rate among these guys.
No other Packers edge rushers are standing out besides Gary. The interior of the Packers’ defense is producing sacks and pressure.
In the middle, Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, and rookie Karl Brooks are all performing admirably.
Through three games, Preston Smith has only generated one pressure and zero sacks.
Smith, Kingsley Enagbare, and Justin Hollins have a total of two pressures and no sacks this season.
Outside of Gary, Lukas Van Ness, a first-round pick, has been the only shining star.
For Green Bay, Van Ness has been productive both running and passing.
With two tackles for a loss and a sack, the former Iowa Hawkeye displays both his athleticism and tenacity.
If Van Ness keeps up this performance, Green Bay will eventually be forced to act because of Smith’s poor play and his.
Currently, Gary’s season sack total is expected to be close to 20. Nick Bosa, the Defensive Player of the Year in the NFL last year, would have lost to that. Bosa recently agreed to a five-year, $170 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Bosa recorded 18.5 sacks in 2022. Gary will surpass that number of sacks if he keeps up his ferocious pace.
He could surpass that amount of money if the Packers don’t pay him soon.
Outside of Green Bay, offensive coordinators and tackles should be more concerned about Gary because he isn’t yet fully recovered.
Through three games, he’s only played 57 snaps and has 3.5 sacks.
The player who converts their snaps into sacks at the highest rate among those at the top of the pressure and sack rankings is none other than No. 52.
Gary is important to Green Bay’s defense. That’s how easy it is.
He had a significant impact on the defense on Sunday at Lambeau Field.
The Packers were able to pull off the victory in large part thanks to Gary’s three sacks.
Even though he’s not fully healthy, Gary ranks among the best pass rushers in the league. When Green Bay can use him to his fullest ability…
Take care.
