Packers are reportedly interested in DB William Jackson III, a free agent in the NFL.
With the Packers’ youth movement off to a strong start, it might not seem like the best time for the team to dangle a toe in the waters of an NFL veteran, especially if that veteran has had a troubled recent history.
However, the team does have a fairly obvious need for some temporary assistance at cornerback, and there just so happens to be a talented—if troubled—free agent waiting by his phone.
This free agent is William Jackson III, a 2016 first-round pick of the Bengals who was a mainstay in Cincinnati for the first four years of his career and earned a starting position as a rookie.
The situation didn’t start to spiral out of control until Jackson signed a three-year, $40 point 5 million contract with Washington after leaving the Bengals as a free agent in 2021.
The Packers, however, might decide to take a small chance on a Jackson comeback.
Cornerback Eric Stokes, who underwent surgeries on his ankle and knee in Week 9 of the previous season, has started the current campaign on the team’s PUP list while he recovers.
It is unknown when Stokes will make up for missing the entirety of training camp.
Jackson is therefore being recommended by the staff at Bleacher Report because, as they state, “the Packers could use some depth at cornerback behind Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas.
“.
Jackson watched two seasons of Rocky in Washington.
Jackson would be a strange choice, though, as Green Bay will be represented by Team Peace and Harmony in 2023.
Jackson’s NFL career has not revolved around that.
Jackson’s performance was initially hindered by injuries after joining Washington and performing admirably (he had eight passes intercepted and two passes defended in 12 games).
Jackson claimed he had a back injury when he was benched during his second season in Washington. Jackson wasn’t hurt, according to coach Ron Rivera, but Washington simply desired a change at the position.
Jackson asked for a trade and received one to Pittsburgh for the astronomical return price of a conditional 2024 and 2025 trade of sixth- and seventh-round draft picks.
Jackson never officially participated in a Steelers down after being placed on injured reserve and never coming back.
Jackson would still bring starting experience and talent to Green Bay’s secondary, despite the fact that his time spent in Washington and Pittsburgh over the previous two seasons was plagued by injuries.
“The former Bengal did record 41 pass breakups while playing for Cincinnati in 59 games.
“.
Being a former first-round pick with talent, he could be had for a bargain as he tries to rejoin the NFL.
However, the Packers might prefer to look elsewhere.
Hamstring injuries are prevalent during pack practices.
Regarding the players on the roster, the injury report going into Week 2 was fairly full, though there weren’t any major surprises.
Hamstring injuries are still prevalent, with Aaron Jones skipping practice to rest a hamstring he injured while diving for a touchdown and Romeo Doubs resting a hamstring he played through in Week 1.
On Sunday, both ought to be available.
Christian Watson did not participate in practice either, and while he hopes to play in Week 2, he will need to start doing so this week.
The Packers are keeping quiet about the status of linebacker Quay Walker, who is still in the concussion protocol as required by teams with players in the protocol.
David Bakhtiari, the left tackle, didn’t participate in practice, but that is nothing new.
Despite having a knee problem, left guard Elgton Jenkins worked out on Wednesday, so he will probably be available on Sunday.
