Melvin Ingram Identified as Potential Late-Season Addition for Minnesota Vikings

By | November 26, 2023

As the NFL season enters its crucial stretch, teams like the Minnesota Vikings are exploring opportunities to bolster their rosters with impactful late-season additions. Despite the limited options in the free-agent market, there are still notable players available who could make meaningful contributions. One such player is edge-rusher Melvin Ingram, formerly of the Miami Dolphins.

Ryan Fowler, writing for Bleacher Report on November 25, pitched Ingram as a valuable signing for the Minnesota Vikings. Fowler highlighted Ingram’s potential to enhance the team’s edge rotation, emphasizing his versatility and ability to apply pressure on passing downs. Even if Ingram doesn’t reach the quarterback, his mere presence could disrupt opposing offenses during crucial playoff moments.

Ingram, a first-round pick over a decade ago, enjoyed a successful stint with the Los Angeles Chargers, earning three consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2017 to 2019. Last season with the Miami Dolphins, he recorded 6 sacks, showcasing his ability to make an impact on the field. Throughout his 11-year career, Ingram has accumulated impressive stats, including 57 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, and 2 defensive touchdowns.

Minnesota’s current situation adds urgency to address their outside linebacker position, particularly with Marcus Davenport on injured reserve due to an ankle injury. Davenport, signed to a one-year, $13 million contract during the previous offseason, has played only four games in 2023, contributing just 2 sacks. The absence of Davenport leaves the Vikings thin at outside linebacker, with Danielle Hunter and DJ Wonnum performing well as starters.

Depth becomes a concern beyond the starting lineup, with Pat Jones II and Andre Carter II rounding out the active roster. Jones, with 4 career sacks, has yet to record one this season, while Carter, an undrafted rookie, has seen limited playing time.

Considering the circumstances, the addition of Melvin Ingram could provide the Vikings with a seasoned edge rusher, offering both experience and depth. With a modest contract, Ingram’s potential to contribute timely sacks during the stretch run and postseason could prove valuable for Minnesota.

As the Vikings gear up to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday, securing a player of Ingram’s caliber could strengthen their defensive lineup for the challenges ahead.
