Green Bay Packers Poised to Add Former All-Rookie Safety for Monday Night Showdown

Posted on December 8, 2023

The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a crucial Monday Night Football matchup against the New York Giants, and they could be getting a major boost to their defense. Safety Darnell Savage, who was drafted in the first round in 2019, is trending towards being available for the game.

Savage missed Week 14 due to a chest injury, but he returned to practice this week and participated fully on Thursday. This is a significant development for the Packers, as Savage’s presence would bolster their secondary and provide much-needed depth.

Early in the season, Savage was lauded for his improved play, particularly his tackling and aggressive run defense. Defensive coordinator Joe Barry praised Savage’s leadership and the intensity he brings to the field.

A Welcome Return for a Crucial Game:

With a 6-6 record, the Packers are in a tight playoff race. Their defense has been their strong point this season, ranking ninth in the NFL in points allowed per game. Adding Savage back to the mix would only further solidify their defensive unit.

In his first game back after a calf injury, Savage played a significant role in the Packers’ victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. His experience and leadership would be invaluable against the Giants’ potent offense.

Positive Signs for Savage’s Return:

Savage’s participation in Thursday’s practice indicates he’s on track to play on Monday night. While he still needs to practice on Friday or Saturday to be officially cleared, the positive signs are encouraging for the Packers and their fans.

Additional Updates:

  • Aaron Jones continued his return to action after an MCL sprain, participating fully in practice for the second straight day.
  • Christian Watson (hamstring) and Quay Walker (shoulder) remained absent from practice.
  • Elgton Jenkins (shoulder) did not practice after being limited on Wednesday.

Looking Ahead:

The Packers are hoping to continue their winning streak and solidify their playoff position. Having Darnell Savage back in the lineup would be a major boost to their chances of success against the Giants on Monday night.
