By | December 1, 2023

Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, expresses frustration over the challenging season faced by young cornerback Eric Stokes. Despite the team’s recent defensive success, Barry acknowledges the setbacks experienced due to injuries and trades, particularly affecting their preferred cornerbacks. Stokes, a third-year cornerback, returned briefly this season only to face another injury, leading to a sense of frustration for both the team and the player.

Barry describes Stokes’ ongoing struggles, stating, “It’s been incredibly frustrating for us, but insanely frustrating for the kid because a player — they want to be out there. That’s just the way they’re wired. So I hope it’s not a waste. We still have some time.”

Stokes, who showcased promise in his rookie season, has encountered a challenging period with injuries, hindering his contributions to the team. Barry emphasizes the emotional toll on the player, emphasizing the innate desire for athletes to be actively involved on the field.

While the season is not entirely lost, Stokes’ repeated injuries pose concerns. Having suffered setbacks early last season and returning in a limited capacity in 2023, Stokes faced reinjury, requiring placement back on the injured reserve list. Barry acknowledges the frustrations felt by both the team and Stokes, emphasizing the player’s eagerness to contribute on the field.

Looking ahead, the Packers are hopeful for Stokes’ full recovery. Despite the current difficulties, the team recognizes Stokes as a promising young cornerback. With Jaire Alexander’s standout performance and Carrington Valentine showing potential, the Packers aim for a formidable cornerback lineup once Stokes returns to full health.

The Packers face a significant challenge in the upcoming Week 13 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. As the defense prepares for the formidable Chiefs’ offense led by Patrick Mahomes, the outcome will shed light on the team’s resilience and adaptability.
