The Dallas Cowboys are considering trading Trey Lance to the Denver Broncos, which is an intriguing trade proposal.
The Dallas Cowboys continue to struggle with injuries throughout their defense, but one position where the team has depth is at quarterback, where three quarterbacks are currently on the roster.
It may not be the kind of quarterback trade that some Cowboys supporters had in mind when they pushed the front office to make one.
According to the most recent NFL trade rumors, Bill Barnwell of ESPN has a crazy Cowboys-Broncos trade proposal.
Barnwell suggested a deal in which Dallas would send Alex Singleton, the starting linebacker for the Broncos, in exchange for Trey Lance. Dallas also exchanges a pick in the fourth round of 2025 for a pick in the sixth round of 2025.
On October 12, 2023, Barnwell wrote, “There’s a sudden surge of teams needing inside linebackers after Week 5, when Buffalo’s Matt Milano and Dallas’ Leighton Vander Esch were sidelined by serious injuries.”.
Although Vander Esch’s neck injury is expected to keep him out for four to six weeks, the Cowboys must be concerned about a potential recurrence or a longer absence given his history with neck problems. Micah Parsons could be moved back to his original position as a middle linebacker, but the potential defensive player of the year is too valuable as a pass-rusher to switch back to a coverage position.
If the Cowboys could find a linebacker who will help them compete for the NFC’s top seed and recover some of that draft capital, it would make sense for them to part ways with Lance, just weeks after they acquired him for a fourth-round pick. Lance is listed as the third quarterback on Dallas’ depth chart, and despite the team’s best efforts, Dak Prescott will probably sign a contract extension next offseason, effectively ending Lance’s chances of starting.

Alex Singleton, a potential trade target for the Dallas Cowboys, has made 55 tackles through six games.
It’s unlikely that Dallas would release quarterback Lance just months after trading a fourth-round pick for him, according to the Cowboys rumor.
However, given Leighton Vander Esch’s injury, it does make sense for Dallas to consider trading a depth position for a need like linebacker.
If the Cowboys were to consider trading for a quarterback, Cooper Rush would be the more likely option.
After the 2024 season, Lance’s four-year, $34 million rookie deal expires.
A $5.3 million cap hit is anticipated for the 23-year-old quarterback in 2024.
The Broncos and Singleton agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract during the offseason, but Denver is looking to trade some of its veterans.
The defender’s base salary for this season is $2 million, and his cap hit is $3.3 million.
Singleton, who just had a career year in 2022, has already recorded 55 tackles through the first six games.
In 17 appearances for Denver last season, the veteran recorded 163 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 quarterback hits, 3 pass deflections, and a forced fumble.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN, Dallas does not intend to exercise Lance’s fifth-year option for 2025, but the team may look into giving the quarterback a new contract.
Rush was the quarterback who was most affected by the Lance trade, according to Archer’s October 4 blog post.
After Prescott suffered a broken right thumb in the season opener, he started 4-1 the previous year.
He signed a two-year deal worth $5 million with the Cowboys in the offseason that also included a $1.25 million signing bonus.
