In October 2024, two Southern California women, Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo, were removed from a Spirit Airlines flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans for wearing crop tops. Initially boarding with sweaters, they removed them due to the plane’s lack of air conditioning, revealing their crop tops. A male flight attendant instructed them to “put something on.” Despite offering to replace their sweaters, they were told it was too late and were asked to leave the plane without a refund.
Another passenger, Carla Hager, who was also wearing a crop top, supported the women by removing her sweater in solidarity. She and her toddler were also removed from the flight. The incident sparked discussions about Spirit Airlines’ dress code policies. In response, the airline updated its Contract of Carriage in January 2025, specifying that passengers wearing “see-through clothing” or those “not adequately covered” may be denied boarding or removed from flights.
