Minnesota Wild captain Jared Spurgeon has signed a five-year contract extension, solidifying his place as a cornerstone of the franchise through the 2029–30 NHL season. The deal, valued at $37.875 million with an average annual value of $7.575 million, mirrors his previous contract and underscores the team’s confidence in his leadership and performance.

 

Spurgeon, 35, has been a mainstay on the Wild’s blue line since joining the team in 2010. Despite facing significant injuries in recent seasons—including hip and back surgeries that limited him to 16 games in the 2023–24 season—he returned to form in the 2024–25 season, contributing four goals and nine assists in 30 games before another injury sidelined him temporarily .

 

General Manager Bill Guerin praised Spurgeon’s resilience and importance to the team, stating, “We love Jared. He’s a homegrown guy. He’s been here for his whole career, and we want him to be here his whole career. It was very important to get this done” .

 

Spurgeon’s leadership extends beyond his on-ice performance. Named the second full-time captain in Wild history in 2021, he has been lauded for his dedication and the respect he commands in the locker room .
