A well-known name is hoping the Boston Celtics will keep a spot open for him since the team’s roster isn’t yet complete.
Austin Rivers, a former guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is currently an unrestricted free agent.
Despite his age, however, he still has something to offer at 31.
Rivers, who is the son of Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, is very familiar with the team.
It appears that he has been following Boston and its staff, even though he was only a teenager when his father assisted in the C’s 2008 championship run.
In fact, according to The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rivers had nothing but praise for Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations.
Even more recently, he spoke with the former Celtics coach to discuss a possible contract.
Austin Rivers stated, “I had a wonderful conversation with Brad actually about a week ago.
“I told him I’d be thrilled to join the team.
He made a lot of encouraging remarks.
We’ll see if that idea materializes.
Brad has always had my heart.
He’s someone I’ve liked forever.
“.
There isn’t a lot of room on the roster right now for Rivers.
On the depth chart, he would probably be preceded by guards Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and Malcolm Brogdon.
If Brogdon’s injury problems don’t get better, Rivers might step in at the beginning of the season.
Austin Rivers participated in 52 games for Minnesota, playing 19 points and 5 minutes per game while scoring 4 points and 9 points on average.
Despite having unremarkable statistics, he can still shoot the ball at a respectable rate, and given his experience, he might be more receptive to a role at the back of the bench.
The Duke product joining the C’s seems a little unlikely, but he obviously respects what Stevens is attempting to accomplish in Boston.
