The Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins may choose to forego his no-trade clause in order to sign with a contender before the October draft, according to NBC Sports’ Peter King.

According to King, it’s “unlikely” that Cousins will be traded before the deadline in his most recent “Football Morning in America” column.
Furthermore, King mentioned that if Miami starter Tua Tagovailoa is sidelined at some point during the next two weeks, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel might “want to roll the dice with Cousins for the rest of the year.”.
The Dolphins have a 5-1 record under Tagovailoa’s leadership, but the 25-year-old has a concerning injury history that includes at least two concussions last season. Cousins is in the final year of his contract, which includes a complete no-trade clause.
With a 114 point 1 passer rating, 1,876 passing yards, and an average of 9 points per pass attempt for the season, Tagovailoa led the NFL among eligible players at the end of the weekend, according to ESPN statistics.
It’s interesting to note that Cousins and Tagovailoa started Monday tied for the league lead with 14 touchdown passes.
Prior to Sunday’s 19-13 victory over the Chicago Bears, Cousins did not confirm nor deny that he would waive his no-trade clause in order to play for a team that is believed to be a championship contender for the remainder of the season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter stated on Saturday that Cousins “won’t look to waive the no-trade clause in his contract and is expected to stay in Minnesota this season.”. Schefter did note, though, that “a contending team with a familiar offense losing its starting quarterback before the NFL’s Oct.
“March 31 trade deadline” might make Cousins reconsider.
Due in part to his previous employment as an offensive coordinator in Washington under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Cousins was frequently mentioned in stories and rumors this past offseason involving the team.
For Monday’s article, King stated that if San Francisco starter Brock Purdy became unavailable before October ended, King believes Shanahan would turn to free-agency signing Sam Darnold.
