In November 2024, U.S. airlines suspended flights to Haiti after multiple aircraft were struck by gunfire near Port-au-Prince. A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale was hit four times while approaching Toussaint Louverture International Airport, injuring a flight attendant and forcing the plane to divert to Santiago, Dominican Republic . JetBlue and American Airlines also reported bullet damage to their aircraft, leading to the suspension of their services to Haiti .

 

In response, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a 30-day ban on U.S. carriers flying to or over Haiti due to safety concerns amid escalating gang violence . The U.S. Embassy in Haiti issued a security alert, warning of gang-led efforts to block travel to and from Port-au-Prince, including armed violence and disruptions to roads, ports, and airports .
